Game 1: The Name Game
This game simply teaches a positive link with your dog's name. From your dog's thinking a strong, fun attachment to it's name when called is very important. Often your dog's name is the first spoken word before something is asked of your dog. So you need to ensure the foundation of the name is powerful.
Games Based Learning.
This is a simple game of catch. A young GSD Pup is learning the catching game. What is being developed through this simple game?
- Eye contact with owner. Essential skill.
- Focus on owner .
- Engagement with owner.
- Simple positions being offered such as a Sit or a Down that can also be developed.
- Proximity to the owner. Essential at times.
All being offered voluntarily by this pup through a game. Using food taken out of his daily allowance.
An example of Shaping
Here I would like Pumba to stand in the canoe. I will break the exercise down in stages, i.e reward for looking at canoe, putting head into canoe, any interaction with canoe, one paw into canoe etc. In early tentaive steps I reward liberally with food and praise, once he starts to learn that element I then wait to see if he gets to offer me any further movement towards the end goal. I also allow him to walk away, I let him work through his frustration ( the whiny bark) , the shake off. I allow him to decide if he wants to reengage. With Shaping he work with the dog, what they want, can they they think through the issue, work it out. A lovely interactive way to coach positions or activities. You the owner can learn so much from watching your dog.
Real time loose lead coaching.
This is Simba, an adolscent GSD, 1st meet with him and his owner. Main focus of session was loose leash walking as owner cannot walk him as he pulls too hard for her. Clip shows how to hold a loose leash, when to mark the behaviour you are trying to achieve, in this case focus on me and walking next to me, rewarding that behaviour, praise and repeat. A very good 1st introduction well done Simba
Nervous Rescue Dog meets Pumba
This rescue dog was recently rehomed to the owner. Apparently she was nervous around dogs and had really only been used for illegal breeding. In this 2 min clip we can see the body language displayed between both dogs and how she soon relaxes around Pumba and the environment and her new owner is now able to create a learning environment.
